A quick guide for MLA paper formatting

The modern language association has developed the MLA format which is used by the students and researchers in the field of language and linguistics for organizing their work uniformly.

Header

The header on your first page should be left-aligned. Write your name, teacher’s name, course name, and ID, and the date in a sequence on separate lines with double spacing.

Write the title of the essay in the middle of the page, after the header. The title is not bold, italic, or underlined. Capitalize each word other than propositions but do not write in block letter format. Do not use a period after the title or the header. 

Page formatting

  1.     Ensure margin size of one inch on all four borders.
  2.     Add a running head of your last name on the top right side of each page inside the one-inch margin.
  3.     Write the page number on the top right corner in the running head after the last name.
  4.     Separate the name and page number with a single space.

  6.     Use double spacing for the entire essay including the paragraphs, and the reference page.
  7.     Don’t leave extra lines between paragraphs or between the title and the body of the paper.
  8.     You do not need to make a separate cover page or title page in MLA format.

Font

You can use any font; however, the most widely used and accepted font in academic writing is Times New Roman at a 12-point size.

Quotations

  1.     Quotes should be mentioned sparingly and there should not be too many quotations in the essay. Since quotations are the direct words of a person or a direct idea from a source, they have to be properly cited.
  2.     You can either incorporate the author’s name in the writing or you can mention it separately as an in-text citation in parentheses.

The block quote starts on a separate line with a one-and-a-half-inch margin from the left side. There is no need to use quotation marks around the block quote which is, otherwise, required for shorter quotes.

References

  1.     The graphs and tables should be placed next to the data that they are related to.
  2.     Write a caption below the image that contains the details for it. The first image should be labeled as fig.1, and so on. The caption should be a brief description of the image.
  3.     The source of the image should be preferentially mentioned below the image in the caption or in the text discussing the image.
  4.     When adding a table, add a table number such as ‘Table 1’ on the top left side and write the title for the table below.
  5.     Add the source of the table below it.

Works cited page

References are written as ‘works cited’ on the last page of the document. The references should be written in alphabetical order with double spacing.

In-text citations

  1.     If you are writing the name of the author in the sentence such as ‘John has indicated that…’, you would write the page number at the end of the sentence without writing the author’s name.
  2.     You can write the citation in the parenthesis such as the name of the author where the information is written in the paragraph such as (John) and you can also mention the page number of the work. 
  3.     When the name of the author is not available you can use the title in the in-text citation. If the source is the book it has to be italicized.
